Back To School, Life

5 Reasons Why You Should Bullet Journal As A Student

Hello friends! Sadly, we are coming to the end of the back to school content, but that also means fall is coming, which I am immensely excited for. Anyway, during quarantine, I was able to pick up something that I used to love- bullet journaling. I’ve worked it into my daily routine, and have a nice relaxed day where I watch everyone’s “plan with me” videos and set up my monthly spread. The whole process is just so nice for unwinding. In addition to being relaxing, bullet journals offer some nifty benefits for students!

Despite what you may have heard or thought, bullet journaling does not have to be an investment. While washi tape and stickers are adorable and fun, they aren’t a necessity to starting a bullet journal. I have a Leuchtturm1917 for almost three years, and use crayola markers and a good pen for my layouts. Chances are that you have some crayola markers laying around, and my bujo was $20! There are some for even cheaper if you search, and you can actually use any old notebook laying around if you don’t mind. See, it’s pretty easy to bullet journal on a budget! Now that that’s cleared up, let’s get into why you should keep a bullet journal as a student!

It is incredibly therapeutic to write all of your feelings out.

Journaling is one of the many things that kept me sane through quarantine. As teens, and in general, school is stressful. Holding on to all of your stress and bundling it up with all of our other emotions inside can contribute to… Think of journaling as free therapy. I mean, of course, if you need therapy or want to go to a therapist, GO, but most of the time I feel like we just need to get our feelings out. Another bonus of journaling is that you’ll have a diary to look back on when you’re old and reminiscing on your high school years.

Your bujo is a great place to organize your calendar.

Let’s be honest, you probably won’t have tons of activities this year, but you need a place to write down those few precious events you have. Your bullet journal is a great place to jot down any upcoming tests, events, or staples in your schedule, like work. Another benefit of tracking your calendar in your bujo is that, if you decide to incorporate journaling into your everyday life, you’ll see what’s coming up, and be reminded that you have dance class at 8 tomorrow! If you want to write down your classes for the day, or just always have a full schedule, I recommend having a monthly and weekly calendar. Writing your plans down twice will help you remember them, and seeing them on a weekly basis will help you plan out the rest of your week.

Tracking your habits is essential to achieving goals.

Are you a goal setter? If not, I would definitely recommend setting some goals for this school year. They can be anything from sleeping for 9 hours a night to dedicating a night to studying once a week! Now that you are going to have some killer goals for this school year, you’ll need to plan, and track your progress. One life changing bujo page is a habit tracker. I love this because it motivates me to complete what I want to! Basically, you write out a mini calendar (nothing fancy) and fill in or cross off the days that you complete your goals! By the end of the month, you’ll see the progress you made and some patterns on why you did or didn’t complete your goals that month!

Planning out your day and daily to-do lists will help you manage your workload.

This one comes back to setting goals, but honestly, planning out your days and weeks will boost your productivity! I use my planner for this, but I’ve seen some INCREDIBLE girls do some really cool weekly layouts, which you’ll see in a second. Planning out your week and days gives them purpose. At the beginning of the week, give yourself a few things that you want to achieve and then break it up throughout the week. This is the most effective way I’ve found to get work done, and is so helpful when doing a big school project, or studying for a test.

Your bujo is yours, and something you can control.

This may sound a little weird, and maybe it’s just me being a control freak, but I love how my bujo is my own. Sure, you can follow intricate pages from bujo superstars, but when it comes down to it, you get to choose what you do. So many things are out of our control during these years, especially now, as we have no true sense of the word “normal.” You get to decide the colors, the pages, the theme, and get to make it for yourself.

What do you think? Are you ready to start your bullet journal for this school year?!?If you need some realistic inspiration while setting up, I definitely recommend checking out  this video. I know that I’ve said this multiple times, but I really can’t recommend keeping a bullet journal enough! Let me know what you think in the comments! Thanks for reading, and happy journaling!!!

  1. Meghan! I’m obsessed with this post! I have been thinking about starting a bullet journal during quarantine but didn’t want to start until I filled out my regular journal. I totally agree that everyone needs to journal and write down their thoughts (it’s so freaking helpful). I also love how you called a bullet journal bujo! So cute! 😊

  2. Hi Meghan thanks for sharing this, as a bullet journal will help so many people, not just students! I wish I had one when I was struggling with my mental health last year, as it would have given me a chance to write down my feelings. I think bullet journals can also help massively with motivations!

  5. I’ve never been one to start a bullet journal before, I’m more of a planner kind of girl! This was a really interesting post to read and I found more ways to use a bullet journal instead of using it as a planner 💗

  6. A wonderful post Meghan! Thank you so much for sharing. I used to have a bujo but now just keep an everyday journal and separate calendar. I enjoyed bullet journalling but felt myself getting way too caught up in making it pretty. I struggled to actually use it properly so decided it probably wasn’t for me. One day though, you never know! Enjoyed this xx

  7. May I simply just say what a relief to discover a person that truly understands what they’re talking about over the internet. You definitely realize how to bring a problem to light and make it important. More people have to look at this and understand this side of your story. It’s surprising you are not more popular given that you definitely have the gift.
