So, you want to shave…

Hello friends! When I was younger, and even now, I would search for a step-by-step guide to every little thing. Seriously, a little 13 year old me would forage the internet on what to do when going to the mall by herself for the first time, or wikihow how to survive being at a restaurant with friends. As you could probably guess from the title of this post, shaving was one of the things that I frantically researched.

Assuming you’re like me, a really curious and overwhelmed tween, I curated this post with exactly what you’re looking for. First off, we have a little bit about what I did when I first started shaving, some choices you have for razors, and then some helpful youtube videos on how to shave!! Allow me to be your surrogate big sister for a few minutes; let’s get you started with some basic tips!!

Some tips

Getting started

I think it was in the spring of 7th grade that I started shaving, although it could have been later. Whatever, age doesn’t matter, but I was super nervous that I would get in trouble for shaving. So, I sheepishly asked my mom if it was okay, and she gave me what I needed and helped me out a little. Overall, super supportive.

Now, you know your parents best. While shaving is not something they should get upset about (except for religious reasons perhaps), you may want to ask before you start. You really don’t have to though. If you can find a new razor, or even buy a cheap one, you should be good to go.

Choosing a razor

Honestly, this part is a tad irrelevant. I just wanted to rave about my new Billie razor because it is life changing!! I used to absolutely hate shaving; I wouldn’t have any energy left at the end of a day to shave. Not to mention that the reusable razors I was using irritated my skin!! Now I get so excited to shave and I turn it into a little thing, with a podcast and some exfoliant.

I’ve found that I don’t like electric razors because it doesn’t have a close shave, but if that’s something you’re interested in definitely check one out! Reusable razors work fine, especially for the first few months. If you don’t have any problems, then you are a master shaver first of all, and you may be okay sticking with them. Although, they aren’t that great for the environment…

What now?!?

Here, I have gathered some very helpful youtube videos that walk you through shaving. Honestly, it isn’t a very hard concept, but they hit on some tips that might save you from razor burn among other things!!

If you feel like you have a handle on things, here are some general tips for you:

  • Wet your skin and use shaving cream or some type of soap/conditioner on your legs before shaving
  • Shave in the opposite direction of hair growth for a close shave on your legs
  • PUT LOTION AFTER YOU SHAVE PLEASE!!

In my opinion…

Girls my age, and probably most girls, take shaving a little too seriously. If someone has stubbly legs, you will know, not because you can see them- they’re barely visible, but because they will make an announcement. We often think that others will tease us or point it out, but do you even notice or care if someone has hair on their body?

It should be your choice whether to shave or not. It can seem radical to ditch a razor, especially with your mom nagging you about shaving your armpits, or informing you that you have a hair or two poking out (if you catch my drift…). Honestly, shaving is a real pain in the neck, and if you’re confident enough and want to forgo it, you go girl!! Thank you so much for reading, and happy shaving!!

  1. Love this!! When I first started shaving, I was so scared to ask my mom! I even tried taking a razor from her room (let’s just say it didn’t go too well love). I def wish I had a post like this when I was younger! You gave some great advice! I also have a Billie razor and am OBSESSSEDDD!!! 😊🙌

    1. I’ve only used really cheap reusable razors, so Billie was a real step up, but I could see how she wouldn’t be impressed!! I think you can order your first month for $9 and then cancel if you don’t like… don’t hold me to that though!!😚💓
