Hello friends!! Today I’m going to be talking about something that I’ve wanted to write about ever since I started my blog (about a year ago now)- periods! More specifically, some tips and tricks that I wish I knew sooner!
I got my period when I was 12, but it was super irregular, and then I “lost it” due to the Female Athlete Triad for 3 years (on and off). Luckily, I’m starting to have a regular cycle again, but I forgot just how painful and annoying periods are! To combat killer symptoms, and make it a little less uncomfortable I’ve picked up on some hacks which I am going to share with you right now…
You can buy period underwear
Crazy, right?!? I’ve been wanting to buy period underwear for a while, but I’m broke, so I can’t give my own opinion, but my friends absolutely love Knix for nightwear. Not to mention that they’re really cute and not all that expensive! They’re great for lighter days too!
Cold water is a miracle worker
Next time that you wake up to find your sheets stained, don’t fret! Fresh blood stains are super easy to get out! Just use some cold water and a little bit of soap! I use dove body soap and just rub and rinse until everything looks good. Seriously, you’d think it would be harder than that.
Finding the right size pad is a game changer
When my period came back, I just stuck on the pads that we had lying around, and didn’t think much of it. I started to notice leaks, even if I hadn’t bled all that much, and the pads would be squished around the side. If this happens to you, you could be wearing the wrong size pad, but don’t worry- Always does a great job at making pad sizes easy to understand and purchase! You can read more from them right HERE!
Sweatpants are your best friend
I mean, always, but sweat pants are especially amazing when you’re on your period for multiple reasons. First of all they’re super comfy, but they make it super easy to layer on your heavy days so you don’t leak. I do this by putting spandex on, but I’ve seen people do swim suit bottoms (and spandex) as well! Wearing spandex (Nike Pros) are a must for me because the compression helps with discomfort.
The pockets on your favorite pair of sweats are also a great hide-away for pads or tampons! No more awkwardly tucking them in your waistline or sleeve!
Flo is great for tracking your period… among other things
“Among other things” is right, but that’s not really what I’m talking about… Flo is an app you can use to track your cycle and symptoms, and after some time can predict and send notifications when your cycle is starting! I prefer it over other period apps because they have helpful articles and discussions!
I swear I spent at least an hour the other day scrolling through the Flo “Secret Chats,” which is basically a bunch of 10 year old talking about their periods and other young girls answering a discussion question. Entertaining, yes, but it also really helps with normalizing symptoms and learning things that you may not have figured out by yourself! There are also chats about teen life in general- school, mental illness, family, a whole bunch of great stuff!
Those are just a few tips and tricks that I’ve picked up! Let me know your period hacks in the comments! Thanks for reading and have a fabulous day!!
